What if my newborn won’t cooperate for photos? Parents often worry about this prior to their newborn session. Try not to worry to0 much about this! Often if a parent is anxious coming in to a newborn session, the newborn baby will feed off of this anxiety and be less likely to cooperate.
First, try to relax. If you are going to an experienced newborn photographer like myself, your baby is in good hands. I have many soothing techniques to help your baby sleep comfortably. Newborn sessions typically last 2-3 hours. If a baby needs a little extra TLC, I will give an additional hour for the session if needed. This amount of time may seem like a lot. It is! Newborn sessions take so long because they need time to be soothed to sleep, time to feed, time to have diaper changes, and time to be slowly and carefully posed into those cute little curly positions.
One of the easiest poses to get a newborn in is what is called “Bottoms Up”. Although we are told as new parents, “back is best” for sleeping, newborns really do well being posed on their little tummies. I can get most newborns to do this pose.
Another pose that is easy to get most newborns to do is side-laying.
Parents will often have hopes that their baby will do all of the poses. Most babies will do almost all of the poses I attempt! There are times when a baby shows signs that they don’t like a pose. If a baby shows signs they are uncomfortable, I try something else. Some newborns are little cuddle bugs and don’t like to be put down. In that case, we will do more swaddle shots. A swaddled newborn is adorable! We can get many adorable photos with a swaddled newborn.
